How can Americans get back into the future business? Let us know at #backtowork
President Bill Clinton gives us his views on the challenges facing the United States today and why government matters—presenting his ideas on restoring economic growth, job creation, financial responsibility, resolving the mortgage crisis, and pursuing a strategy to get us “back in the future business.” He explains how we got into the current economic crisis, and offers specific recommendations on how we can put people back to work, increase bank lending and corporate investment, double our exports, restore our manufacturing base, and create new businesses. He supports President Obama’s emphasis on green technology, saying that changing the way we produce and consume energy is the strategy most likely to spark a fast-growing economy while enhancing our national security.
Clinton also stresses that we need a strong private sector and a smart government working together to restore prosperity and progress, demonstrating that whenever we’ve given in to the temptation to blame government for all our problems, we’ve lost our ability to produce sustained economic growth and shared prosperity.
Clinton writes, “There is simply no evidence that we can succeed in the twenty-first century with an antigovernment strategy,” based on “a philosophy grounded in ‘you’re on your own’ rather than ‘we’re all in this together.’ ” He believes that conflict between government and the private sector has proved to be good politics but has produced bad policies, giving us a weak economy with not enough jobs, growing income inequality and poverty, and a decline in our competitive position. In the real world, cooperation works much better than conflict, and “Americans need victories in real life.”

Put partisan politics aside. Every man, woman and high schooler on up should sit down and read this book and then view the two interviews on CSPAN that help expand on the concepts. The President has put into words what I (and I’m sure millions of others) have been struggling to articulate and sincerely believe – we must bring the public and private sectors together at all levels – city, state & federal. It’s been a battle within the ngo’s locally. Better communication, breaking down the terrortorialism for the good of the people we serve…simple, but not easy to achieve, but our one last hope for a better world. I am so sick of the “it’s the government’s fault” mantra. Thank you, President Clinton. If I’m crazy because I agree with your “diagnosis,” then at least I’m in some pretty good company.
Just finished listening to the book—It is great! Should be required reading for everyone, yes, everyone in Congress and the Senate! I am so impressed! THANKS!
(Like was said on the Daily Show–Barrack needs to be sure to read it and use it in the campaign!)

This is a book that should be required reading for everyone who plans to vote in the 2012 general election. The ideas are varied and detailed and make sense. Clinton has a deep understanding of the enormous economic problems in this country and has some well-thought-out ideas to start to resolve many of them. If even one or two of the 40+ ideas were implemented, we could put many, many unemployed people back to work and start to get the United States back on the rails to prosperity.
Mr. President,
As a side bar, I was also a whistle blower at Fannie Mae. I called the NSA on Fannie Mae in 1995-1996, three times. During that period I continued working even as a contract was put out on me to get rid of me permanently, end my life. Sometimes you have to take steps that no one else will.
I risked my life to prevent the country from going down the tubes…..more likely I only delayed it by a few years. I was black listed from finding a job, refused a reference. At least I was not shot to death in Bosnia as James Johnson’s predecessor was. Still after and during my work at Fannie Mae I suffered the consequences for speaking out, for doing my duty as a citizen of the United States of America.
Then as a poster on the Washington Post I kicked the hornets nest again and again and again. I changed things. Without me Hillary and Barack wouldn’t have made it to the finish line. I am still under scrutiny at home, on my computer and my phone, by satellite…which is okay but a little irritating. But again, if you want to effect change you have to create it not ask for it. No one will help you if you don’t point out the truth and be willing to risk the firestorm of propaganda that follows. You were so good at you job that they spent the next 8 years after you left office kicking yours and Jimmy Carters name around the gutters. This was not a moral or an immoral move on their part, it was done to limit your effectiveness….it was a ploy. I am not a Democrat or a Republican….I am a citizen. I don’t care who is in office as long as they are telling the truth. However hoping that they will is a waste of time you have to make them.
Liked your book, a little sorry that you left out the vectors that were the hidden effectors. Cheers. You were a good President.Congratulations on your life. You walk your talk.
